SPC flooring has transformed the UK market. It delivers durability, water resistance and a premium look that works for residential and commercial spaces alike. But there’s one factor that decides whether a project becomes a showcase or a callback: installation quality.

This guide is written for UK installers, distributors and project partners who want consistent, professional results on site.

Why SPC installation matters (especially in the UK)

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) is engineered for stability, but it’s not “install-proof”. Most issues we see in the field—gaps, lifting edges, noisy floors, weak joints—come from one of three things:

• Subfloor not flat enough
• Moisture not checked (or ignored)
• Planks not acclimated to the room conditions

The UK’s variable temperature and humidity make acclimation and moisture checks non-negotiable. Doing it right protects your reputation and reduces aftercare.

Step 1: Subfloor preparation (the part you can’t rush)

Before the first plank goes down, confirm the subfloor is:

• **Level**: SPC typically tolerates up to **3 mm over 3 metres**. Beyond that, use a levelling compound.
• **Clean**: Dust and debris can prevent a full click engagement and create hollow spots.
• **Dry**: Moisture is the silent killer. Always test.
• **Stable**: Loose boards or movement in the base will translate into movement in the floor.

Practical tip: walk the area and listen. Creaks, bounce or flex usually mean you need to fix the base before you install.

Step 2: Moisture checks (protect your work)

Moisture-related failures are one of the most expensive problems in flooring. It’s also one of the easiest to prevent.

• For **concrete**, measure relative humidity (RH) with the appropriate method.
• For **wood**, check moisture content and investigate any signs of damp.

If you’re unsure, don’t guess. Document your readings. It’s good practice for your own records and helps with warranty discussions.

Step 3: Acclimation (48 hours that save you weeks)

Acclimate SPC planks for 48 hours in the room where they’ll be installed.

• Store cartons **flat**
• Keep them **unopened**
• Maintain normal room temperature

Why it matters: even rigid-core products expand and contract with temperature changes. Skipping acclimation increases the risk of gaps or pressure build-up that can cause buckling.

Step 4: Layout planning (make the finish look intentional)

A good layout prevents awkward cuts and keeps the floor visually balanced.

• Start from the **longest, straightest wall**
• Work **perpendicular to the main light source** where possible
• Use perimeter spacers (typically **10–12 mm**) for expansion
• Stagger end joints by at least **300 mm**

Dry-lay your first 2–3 rows. It’s the fastest way to catch alignment issues before they multiply.

Step 5: Click system technique (smooth, not forced)

Most modern SPC click systems are designed to lock cleanly—if the angle and alignment are right.

• Insert at roughly **45°**
• Lower gently (don’t drop)
• Listen/feel for a solid engagement
• If it doesn’t click: **lift and reset**—don’t force it

For stubborn joints, use a tapping block and a rubber mallet lightly. Forcing the lock can damage the profile and create future gaps.

Step 6: Transitions, edges and details (where “professional” shows)

Transitions aren’t an afterthought. They’re part of the finished product.

• Use correct profiles at doorways and room changes
• Keep expansion gaps around fixed objects (kitchen islands, columns, pipes)
• Undercut door frames where needed for a clean slide-in finish

Once complete:

• Remove spacers
• Fit skirting/trim to cover expansion gaps
• Clean with a damp microfibre cloth (not soaking wet)

Common mistakes to avoid

• **Skipping acclimation** because “it’s rigid core”
• **Ignoring moisture** because the surface looks dry
• **Poor subfloor prep** (the floor will always reveal it later)
• **No expansion gap** around the perimeter
• **Forcing joints** and damaging the locking system
